Emerging Research Track

The Emerging Research Track at ICPE invites bold, early-stage ideas and preliminary results that explore new directions in performance engineering. This track is the place to propose visionary research, present provocative positions, and share work-in-progress that benefits from early community feedback.

We solicit two paper types

  • Position / Vision / Idea Papers — Provocative positions, conceptual frameworks, or visions that aim to motivate new research directions. Papers should clearly state the research question, the rationale, and sketch plausible approaches and challenges. Title must include “(Position Paper)”. Length: ≤ 6 pages (figures/tables count; references and anonymized appendices do not).
  • Work-in-Progress (WIP) Papers — Preliminary research with early results, limited evaluation, or open challenges. Submissions should explain what has been done, list open issues, and justify why the work is promising. Title must include “(Work In Progress Paper)”. Length: ≤ 6 pages (same rules as above).

Why submit?

This track is ideal for authors who want feedback on nascent ideas, to start community conversations around new problems, or to report promising but incomplete results. Accepted papers will appear in the ICPE companion proceedings and may be invited to oral talks, lightning sessions, or posters.

Submission & format

  • Submit via HotCRP (see conference Important Dates page for deadlines).
  • Use the ACM two-column format (LaTeX preferred).
  • Submissions must be double-anonymized: anonymize author names, affiliations, acknowledgments, and artifact links. Guidance on anonymization is available on the track page.
  • Accepted camera-ready papers may use one extra page only if shepherded to address reviewer comments; extra content must not introduce unreviewed, substantial new results.

Review process & expectations

  • Papers will be reviewed by the Research Track PC using tailored rubrics for Position vs WIP. Review criteria emphasize (for positions) novelty and potential to motivate future work, and (for WIP) clarity about methods, preliminary evidence, and a transparent listing of open issues.

Presentation formats

  • Depending on program fit, accepted papers may receive: full oral slots, short lightning talks, poster slots, and/or participation in an “Idea Salon” for interactive feedback.

Artifacts, reproducibility & openness

  • Authors are encouraged (but not required) to provide anonymized links to code, data, or artifact snapshots (HotCRP provides a field for artifact links). Include a short “Reproducibility & Availability” paragraph in the submission if applicable.

Recognition & community

  • The track may award “Best Emerging Paper” and “Best Vision Paper.” We welcome interdisciplinary submissions, negative results that provide learning for the community, and contributions from industry and early-career researchers.

Contact & questions

  • Track Co-Chairs:
    • Pooyan Jamshidi (University of South Carolina, USA
    • Beatrice Ombuki-Berman (Brock University, Canada)
  • For questions about scope or anonymization, see the track FAQ or contact the track chairs via the conference contact form.

We look forward to fresh ideas that push the boundaries of performance engineering — be bold, be clear, and start the conversation.
